Ukrainian law enforcement authorities conducted a surprise raid on an underground online casino in the city of Dnipro reportedly generating over $50 millionin annual turnover. The illegal business was allegedly led by the son of an unnamed fugitive businessman under international sanctions. This occasion marks the firsthigh-profile crackdown since Ukraine updated its gambling legislation, demonstrating the nation’s ability to enforce regulations.

The Illegal Operation Commanded Impressive Resources

TheProsecutor General’s Office confirmed that the recent operation by Ukrainian law enforcement had uncovered an international illegal online gambling operation primarily dealing in cryptocurrencies. Cybercrime investigators uncovered sophisticated methods to launder proceedsthrough shadow markets, helping evade detection. The online casino employed over 120 individualsin various positions. 

After an extensive searchof the premises, police seized gambling equipment, electronic storage devices, mobile phones, and extensive documentation regarding the illegal activities. Authorities estimate the organizers’ monthly earnings exceeded $5 million, indicating the vast scaleof the operation and hinting that it had run undisturbed for a significant amount of time.

Investigators are now working on filing motions for asset seizures andidentifying more peoplelinked to the operation. This crackdown was possible thanks to the cooperation between the Main Investigation Unit of the National Police of Ukraineand the Cyber Police Department. High-ranking casino members could face charges oflarge-scale fraudcommitted by an organized criminal group, which carries severe penalties.
